A Tribute to Peter
I first met Peter at the Hare and Hounds - Ramsbottom, brought together by our shared love for Manchester United. What started as match-day company soon blossomed into a wonderful friendship defined by Peter’s truly epicurean approach to life.
He had a rare gift for savouring the best of things—whether it was a perfectly aged Rioja, a rare real ale, or a feast built from ingredients we’d spent the morning hand-selecting.
Our search for his 'new pad' was a testament to that spirit. We explored many properties together, but the mission was as much about the journey as the destination; we made sure to enjoy plenty of good food along the way before he finally settled in Castlefield. When he did, his home became a true reflection of him—anchored by that 'awe-inspiring' bookcase that scaled the height and length of the wall.
Peter also had a great affection for cats, often photographing those he encountered on his travels.
However, his heart belonged to his own companion, who lived with him for many years. He spoke of her with such fondness, especially when retelling the classic tale of the 'spaghetti incident'—a story that never failed to bring a smile to his face.
Peter was a man of remarkable layers. He was an academic and a traveller who sent tales from across the globe, yet he was also the boy who, at two years old, stood at the bus stop reciting the bus timetable from memory.
Peter became such a valuable friend in my life that he joined my family for Christmases, bringing with him a warmth and intellect that touched everyone he met, from his students to my own parents.
Whether we were on a real ale tour in Wales or just catching up over a pie and a pint—or a tea, in my case—Peter’s company was a true privilege. He was a brilliant mind, a true gentleman, and a dear friend. I, along with so many others, am going to miss him immensely.
